The region

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the capital of the French Basque district of Basse-Navarre, is built along the large, historic road between France and Spain at the foot of the Pyrenees. It is also one of the most important stages towards Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle (the important Pilgrimage town of the region), a crossing point before continuing through the mountains.    


The town is separated by the Nive river and is accessed by an old cobblestone bridge with a pink sandstone tower. The superb main street climbs up to the citadel, surrounded by 15th and 16th century homes.

Cultural activities

The town is full of activities to discover, such as the ancient defensive walls, the Notre-Dame church, the ‘Pont Neuf’, the bishops’ prison, the citadel or the various forts, including the archway of Saint-Jacques which has been awarded the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gastronomy

French Basque cuisine is highly renowned. Its specialties include veal ‘Axoa’ and excellent Espelette chilli blood sausages, and not forgetting the Bayonne ham, sheep cheese and the famous Basque sausage.
